About DZ
I’m Dave, a documentary photographer based on the South Coast of the UK, just outside Southampton in Hampshire.
Zaple HQ is home to me, my wife Emma, and a steadily growing collection of adventure kit. When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me travelling, planning the next journey, halfway through a DIY project, or hosting friends around a table somewhere.
Paramedic.
Having been a paramedic for over 12 years I have witnessed the very best and worst life has to offer. The last decade has really brought home the following message: life is short.
This has made me realise how passionate I really am about photography. My main aim is to capture moments that would otherwise be lost, before it’s too late. In 2025 I made the tough decision to de-register as a paramedic and go all in on photography.
Photographer.
For many years, I was rarely seen without a camera. I had however, never considered myself talented enough to pursue it as a career. In 2016 I was asked (persuaded) to shoot my father in law’s wedding: my first real photography responsibility. I bought a new camera and this adventure began. Recently, I have found real joy and comfort in capturing peoples spirit and the love found in all aspects of life. I find it very cathartic on the ‘dark side of the lens’. Also the name of an incredible short film.
Paddleboarder.
It all started on the Thames in 2012 in preparation for a huge adventure down the Missouri. Subsequent paddles haven’t been any less epic, as I proposed to, the now EZ, on a paddle adventure in the Isles of Scilly.
I’ve built a camera kit to take afloat, so far it’s all had 100% survival rate, thankfully! I’ll share some photos from these shoots soon!
